Why extension leads may lead to an electrical rewire.

If, when using your electrical installation, you're having to plug in appliances and accessories and equipment via extension leads, it may be time to contemplate having your home rewired.

Extension leads were never built or supposed to be a permanent fixture of your electrical installation. The intention of an extension lead was to be a temporary fix for if you have multiple things to plug into an electrical socket. However, plugging in multiple appliances to an extension lead that is then plugged into one single socket may lead to overheating and overloading of that socket, resulting in an electrical fire.

Did you know electrical fires are the most common type of fire found in the domestic property, and a majority of those fires result directly from improperly used extension leads.

Regularly, when undertaking electrical installation condition reports, we see extension leads that have been tucked away behind a bed trailing from one side of the bedroom to the other, where there is no airflow around the extension lead and they may have 4 or 5 things plugged in to the lead. The extension lead will start to get very warm and can result in an electrical fire in the bedroom.

It's imperative that if you're using multiple extension leads throughout your home, you contemplate ever having your home rewired or having additional sockets installed into your existing electrical installation. Give us a call now if you think now is the time to rewire your home.
