Hi, I’m Mitchell, the owner of full circuit solutions – Your local expert electricians in Essex! Over the last 5 years we have been rewiring homes in Essex and Herts and can boast well over 100 homes rewired. Given that fact, we do consider ourselves somewhat experts in the field and in this short article I wanted to address one of the most common questions we get asked when people just like yourself are thinking about a home rewire.

How long does it take to rewire a house?

Before we dive into the details of rewiring a house, let me introduce Full Circuit Solutions. We're a team of expert electricians who specialize in rewiring houses. Over the past 5 years, we've completed over 100 home rewiring projects, ranging from small bungalows to large multi-story houses. We pride ourselves on our commitment to customer service and our attention to detail. Our team is always professional, respectful, and transparent, and we make sure to communicate with our clients every step of the way.

Now lets get into the rewiring process

Step 1.  Before the rewire begins the first step is to assess the property and accurately plan where all of your electrical outlets and accessories will be positioned. The clearer this is before the works start, the faster and more effectively we can undertake the project. During this stage we will plan the cable routes and mark out all of the chases on the walls so when its time to get going, our team know exactly what to do.

Step 2.  Disconnect and remove old wiring. This is usually an easy and quick task, and most of the older wiring will be removed at the same time as the new wiring is installed. We will often try to use similar cable routes through floors and ceiling where possible so as to limit the amount of new holes drilled through the existing building structure.

Step 3.  First fixing. The first fix is the messy works. This includes the chasing out of walls, fitting the back boxes and installing all of the new cabling. During this stage, the house will look a lot more like a building site than a home and is easily the longest and most labour-intensive part of the project. This is where time can be won or lost on the project.

Step 4.  Second fix, testing and inspecting. Once all of the cabling has been installed our team can move on to connecting all of your new switches, sockets and lights and begin [powering up the installation. Whilst we are powering up, we will take time to test the installation using a multi function meter to ensure that the circuits and perfectly safe and that no damage has occurred to the new wiring during the first and 2nd fix stages.

Step 5.  Deep Clean. Rewiring is a messy job and that being said, all of our home rewires come with a complimentary deep clean. Our team will swiftly move through the house room to room, sweeping, cleaning a mopping to make sure that when you arrive back at the property the place is spick and spam ready for you to move your belongings into the place and live In the sound knowledge that your home is electrically safe and will be for the next 30+ years.

This process on an average 3 bedroom house will take around 5 days not including any pre works surveys and assessments. The process can be sped up with bigger teams if needed and not all rewires need to be completed so quicker but as a general rule of thumb, for an in and out rewire – 5 days is the golden number

What can be done to speed up the rewiring process

  1. Clear communication and planning

    • This is key to a smooth running project. The clearer you are with your specification of what you want and where you want it is detrimental to the pace at which we can install it. Having to continuously stop to ask questions because the specification wasn’t clear enough could lead to days being added to a project.

  2. Team size and experience

    • A team of three made up of a lead electrician, and electrician and an experienced apprentice will rewire a standard house in 4 to 6 days providing the right planning has been completed beforehand. Increasing the team size can massively reduce the time spent on the project. However, a larger team will require very precise planning as any hold ups on site can result in big cost implications. No-one wants to be paying for 6 people kicking dust around a building site and not working whilst a client decides what height they want the televsion!

  1. Accessibility of the property

    • The clearer the better. We always advise the client that moving your belongings into storage and vacanting the property for a week is always the best course of action. You get a nice relaxing holiday and we get a clear run at rewiring ther house as quickly, safely and efficienctly as possible. It can actually work out much more cost effective for you to move your belongings into storage and go abroad for the week whilst you have your property rewired than what it would cost for us to rewire an occupied property whilst trying to climb furniture, tidy up as we work and reinstate temporary electrical services every evening.
